About the project:

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has a need to analyze vehicle flows on several interconnected freeways, arterials and local roadways that are part of large network systems and may be better studied with traffic simulation models instead of traditional analysis techniques. Traffic simulation models can be used to analyze vehicle flows at a microscopic (high), macroscopic (low), or mesoscopic (intermediate) level of detail. The focus of this study is on transportation system analyses at the mesoscopic level.

The purpose of this project is to assess the strengths and weaknesses of two or three commercially available mesoscopic models with regards to data needs, difficulty/ease of model construction and updating, compatibility with existing analysis tools, relevance/accuracy of outputs, etc.. Pilot tests will be performed on a corridor in Virginia to showcase the capabilities of the selected models. Recommendations will be made to VDOT regarding their suitability for use by the agency.
