A common perception is that most commercial truck crashes occur on interstate highways. Most safety screening and enforcement also occur on interstates because truck volumes are high and personnel can be safely co-located with other enforcement activities at weigh stations.
Recently, however, the public sector has increased the emphasis on addressing fatal and serious injury crashes on rural roads, including those involving commercial motor vehicles. This study will identify the attributes and types of carriers involved in fatal crashes and whether these carrier attributes should become a signficant part of integrated state and federal commercial vehicle safety improvement efforts. Virginia and North Carolina will collect and analyze data through a cooperative effort between the two states. This project represents the Virginia portion of the overall effort.
