Investigation of System Operations Performance Measures for the Virginia Department of Transportation

Project No: 80298

Target Completion Date: June 25, 2007 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

The focus of the surface transportation community has been steadily shifting over the past decade from one of construction and maintenance to system operations. To support this new focus, new monitoring tools are necessary. VDOT’s Operations Management pision needs to gauge system performance for planning and developing effective future operational systems and strategies.

The project will focus on helping VDOT identify and use system operations performance measures based on existing data. The primary tasks are:

1. Identify, develop, and propose system operations performance measures in conjunction with a VDOT steering committee;

2. Implement select measures using existing data on a password protected website so as to provide the committee and VDOT with hands-on experience in using the measures;

3. Support VDOT and the committee in identifying data needs for expanded peformance measurement;   and

4. Provide support for the development of an annual report for operations management.
