Implementation and Evaluation of Traffic Responsive Control in Northern Virginia

Project No: 85826

Target Completion Date: February 12, 2009 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

Traffic responsive plan selection is one of the most underutilized features of modern traffic signal controllers.  The TRPS mode uses count and occupancy data collected from system detectors to select the most appropriate timing plan.  The objective of this study is to implement TRPS in NOVA and provide and before and after comparison of results.  It is believed that TRPS could provide reductions in total system delay and travel time and reduced costs through less frequent optimization updates.
