Identification of Core Functions and Deployment Criteria for Safety Service Patrols in Virginia

About the project

Safety Service Patrols (SSPs) are regarded as an asset to urban traffic management in Virginia. Customer service provided by these programs is cited by the media and delay reduction benefits resulting from SS Patrolers' participation in incident management is seen as justification for their deployment. Functions provided by SSPs vary within Virginia, and although these variances are acceptable and often necessary due to regional differences in geography and traffic characteristics, a core set of functions that all SSP programs are responsible for providing is needed. The purpose of this project is to identify a set of core functions for which all SSP programs will be held accountable, and for which performance measures can be collected and reported. Further, the research will develop a methodology for identifying roadway segments that would benefit from the deployment of a safety service patrol.
