Hurricane Evacuation Route Analysis

Project No: 74111

Target Completion Date: January 15, 2005 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

Hurricane evacuation routes have been established to facilitate the movement of vehicles away from flood prone areas in Hampton Roads in the case of a hurricane. While significant effort has gone in to the establishment of routes and models have been developed to estimate the demand on each route, little work has been done to determine the traffic flow impacts of an evacuation. This study will use microscopic simulation modeling to determine the traffic flow impact of evacuations under various storm scenarios. Results from the analysis will be used to improve hurricane evacuation planning. Both “normal” roadway configurations and a lane reversal scenario will be considered.
