The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) completed its original “Management Plan for Historic Bridges in Virginia” in 2001. It identified the management and treatment needs for more than 50 bridges inpidually eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and under state purview.
The initial plan included a recommendation that VDOT should review and update it approximately every 10 years. This project will be the “scoping phase” for the larger, formal update of the historic bridge management plan.
This scoping phase will entail collecting information on the status and condition of the bridges included the 2001 plan. VDOT then will use this information to determine the final scope of the updated management plan.
This study also will allow the work on the follow-up project, the updated management plan, to proceed more quickly when it is initiated.
