Target Completion Date: October 31, 2012 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering
Although there has been research on active traffic management (ATM) in Europe and in isolated applications in the United States, there is a need to define guidelines for when various ATM techniques might offer positive improvements in Virginia.
This project will synthesize available data from other deployments of this technology and develop generalized guidelines for when different ATM approaches should be applied on Virginia roads. The research team will develop a list of candidate locations where active traffic management may offer the potential to improve flow and safety. Methods to include ATM in traditional planning processes along with common capacity expansion projects also will be developed.
This list will assist the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Operations and Security pision and VDOT’s regional operations staff in prioritizing where ATM projects may be needed and help focus future investment decisions.
