Evaluation of the I-66 Active Traffic Management System: Phase 2

Project No: 00122

Target Completion Date: October 5, 2018 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

VTRC recently completed an evaluation of the I-66 Active Traffic Management (ATM) system, covering its first 5 months of operation.  That analysis showed several benefits attributable to dynamic hard shoulder running (HSR), but only 1.5 months of data were available with advisory variable speed limits (AVSLs) active.  This project will expand the evaluation of the I-66 ATM, focusing on differentiating the effect of the AVSLs and the HSR.  The evaluation will collect data until the ATM gantries are removed due to construction of the I-66 High Occupancy Toll Project in the summer of 2017. Both operational and safety effects of the system will be evaluated.
