About the project:

Many vehicle crashes occur when drivers fail to safely negotiate horizontal curves.

This project will address that issue by evaluating potential technologies that can actively delineate horizontal curves. Most current methods are passive systems that rely solely on headlights to help the driver guide the vehicle. The most common of these include reduced speed limits, guideposts and chevron or curve warning signs, which have been found to considerably reduce vehicle speed after installation.

New technologies are available, however, that can actively delineate horizontal curves and do not require headlights to be visible.

The research team will assess the performance for these new active systems as well as the traditional static devices and recommend the most effective use of each in the final report.
