Development of Safety Performance Functions for Intersections in Virginia

Project No: 91272

Target Completion Date: January 31, 2010 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

Safety performance functions relate the frequency of crashes by severity with causal factors on specific types of roads.  These functions are used to estimate the potential long-term safety impact of implementing appropriate countermeasures and thereby help prioritize the implementation of such crash countermeasures.

This project involves creating safety performance functions that are appropriate for Virginia, for different types of intersections and crash severity, and that can be used in conjunction with the Safety Analyst Software the Federal Highway Administration is developing
