Development of Safety Performance Functions for Freeway and Multilane Highway Segments in Virginia

Project No: 99048

Target Completion Date: May 19, 2014 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

In 2009, VDOT implemented SafetyAnalyst, a traffic safety management software developed by the Federal Highway Administration. SafetyAnalyst helps identify high crash risk sites, prioritize the identified sites and recommend appropriate countermeasures. A core requirement for using SafetyAnalyst includes having approprate safety performance functions (SPFs).

The model contains default safety performance functions, though none were developed using Virginia data. There is a likelihood, then, that results derived from these default values for Virginia would be inaccurate.

The purpose of this research is to develop safety performance functions for freeway and multilane highway segments in Virginia to replace the default values in SafetyAnalyst.
