Determining the Core Functions of VDOT Smart Traffic Centers

Project No: 77079

Target Completion Date: June 27, 2006 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

Smart Traffic Centers (STCs) have been established in 6 VDOT districts. Practices, processes, organizational structures, and relationships with other VDOT functions vary widely among these STCs. VDOT ITS units can benefit from a coordinated understanding of best practices, lessons learned, and STC development. This study, through interviews with STC practitioners and documentation of STC functions, will derive and deliver a concrete description of core functions across STCs, supported by descriptions of specific functions as they relate to particular STCs. This should lead to the establishment of a baseline for the development of standard operation procedures and performance measures for STCs.
