Assessment of the Performance of LED Road Lighting Technology

Project No: 00043

Target Completion Date: October 19, 2015 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

This study will assess the performance of light-emitting diode (LED)-based exterior luminaires. Due to the variability in the performance and life expectancy of these new technologies, a test that considers the long-term performance of these systems is required before developing the specifications required by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

During this assessment, an installation of LED-based luminaires will first be tested at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), where the electrical and lighting performance will be evaluated.

Following the laboratory testing, the LED-based systems will be evaluated in the field in a VDOT Park and Ride facility. Here, the light output will be monitored over a period of 24 months using light meters and a VTTI developed mobile-measurement system.

Based on the results of the performance testing, luminaire specifications for the LED lighting system will be developed for implementation by VDOT.
