Application of Stochastic Optimization Method (SOM) in Traffic Signal Control Settings Optimization

Project No: 85365

Target Completion Date: November 28, 2008 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

The purpose of this project is to apply recently developed stochastic optimization method to an arterial network in Northern Virginia and quantify the benefits via a before and after study.  The scope of this project will be limited to coordinated actuated traffic signalized arterial network in Northern Virginia; however the methodology is applicable to any coordinated actuated signal system.  The primary benefit of the research will be improvements in the operation of the signal system capable of considering stochastic variability.
