Developing Guidelines for Context Specific Crosswalk Design

Project No: 124330

Target Completion Date: June 30, 2026 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

Increases in pedestrian-motor vehicle crashes in Virginia warrant additional scrutiny on current pedestrian safety practices, including crosswalk design. High visibility crosswalks (continental, bar pairs, ladder, and zebra markings) have been shown to increase crosswalk visibility for drivers compared to standard transverse parallel line crosswalks. While VDOT currently provides guidance for situations in which high visibility crosswalks should be used, it has not been assessed by context-driven safety analysis and localities may follow different guidance. This research effort aims to provide additional guidance for high visibility crosswalk usage by analyzing crosswalk safety in a variety of roadway contexts.
