A Systemic Evaluation of Wrong Way Driving Crashes and Countermeasures on VDOT Roadways
Project No: 121990
Target Completion Date: October 31, 2023 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering
About the project:
This project aims to perform a systemic evaluation of wrong way driving (WWD) incidents, crash risks, and countermeasures on VDOT’s roadways. This study will assess the magnitude of WWD crashes in Virginia, including the number of injuries and fatalities. Also, the study will develop a toolbox of systemic WWD countermeasures that can be applied at typical interchange types found in Virginia, customized to Virginia’s design standards and needs, and a recommendation for prioritization of these systemic countermeasures similar to previous/ongoing VDOT efforts to deploy other systemic safety improvements. The results of the study may identify mitigation measures for WWD events that are compatible with the existing Virginia Intelligent Transportation System infrastructure. The scope will be limited to limited access highway ramps and interchanges and selected non-limited access divided highways.
